What it is

Home visit physiotherapy — what it means

Home visit physiotherapy — also called mobile or domiciliary physiotherapy — is a private physiotherapy service where a qualified clinician travels to the patient’s home, flat, care home, or supported living setting, rather than the patient attending a clinic.

Home physiotherapy is available across our full service area subject to clinician availability, suitability, and travel coverage — we confirm this before any visit is arranged.

  • A home physiotherapy assessment in your own environment
  • A home physio care plan agreed with you — visits, goals, next steps
  • Movement guidance, home exercise programme, functional rehabilitation practice
  • Referral or MDT coordination where appropriate
  • Consent-led involvement of family members or carers where you choose it
Why people come to Physio Zones

The situations that bring people to home physiotherapy

Travelling to a clinic is difficult right now — post-operative precautions, significant pain or fatigue, limited car access, or a condition that makes a car journey uncomfortable. A physiotherapist home visit brings the assessment and treatment to you rather than requiring you to manage the journey first.

You’re arranging physiotherapy for a relative who can’t travel easily — a son or daughter, a spouse, or a family member navigating a discharge from hospital. If you’re in this position, you’ve found the right page, and we’re used to supporting this kind of enquiry directly.

The home environment is where the assessment needs to happen — managing the stairs, getting in and out of a particular chair, or moving confidently between rooms. Assessing you at home gives the clinician information a clinic room simply cannot replicate.

Your home visit

What a home physiotherapy visit actually involves

Confirming coverage and suitability

Before any visit is arranged, we confirm that the location is within our travel area and that a home visit is the right option for the clinical situation. If it isn't, we'll tell you straight.

Pre-visit information

We'll ask for any relevant information that helps the clinician prepare — discharge paperwork, medical letters, and access details such as parking or steps at the entrance.

Arrival, consent, and discussion

Your physiotherapist introduces themselves, explains what the visit involves, and confirms your consent before proceeding. A family member or carer can be present throughout if that's your preference.

Assessment in the home setting

History, current symptoms and goals, followed by a functional and movement review in your own environment — on the stairs, from your chair, around the rooms that actually matter to your day.

Three home-visit pathways

Where to find more detail for your situation

Elderly physiotherapy at home

Mobility, strength and balance work for older adults where a familiar home environment is more appropriate than a clinic visit. Assessed individually — never against an age-based template.

Post-hospital discharge

Support after joint replacement, a fall, or a medical admission. We work within the scope of your recovery — not replacing hospital follow-up or GP oversight.

Neurological home physiotherapy

Home-based delivery for stroke, Parkinson's, MS or acquired brain injury, subject to verified clinician competence and careful suitability assessment.

Care home & supported living

Assessment, exercise instruction, transfers, mobility and gait training within a residential setting where access and consent arrangements are in place.

Beyond the clinic

The practical side of a home visit

The most common questions before a first visit — about space, equipment, and what to have ready.

What space is needed?

Enough clear floor space to observe your movement safely — no need to clear the room. Most assessments use existing furniture like chairs, beds and stairs as part of the session.

What does the physio bring?

Portable clinical essentials — assessment tools, documentation, and relevant exercise aids. Large rehabilitation equipment isn't part of a home visit; if specialised kit would help, we'll discuss it.

What should I have ready?

Discharge letters or medical summaries if you have them, comfortable clothing that lets us see how you move, and a heads-up if there are parking restrictions near your address.

Who is coming to your home

Regulated, insured, and accountable

HCPC registration

Every visiting physiotherapist is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. You can verify current registration on the HCPC public register before they arrive — we encourage this.

Consent, privacy & safeguarding

Every visit begins with the clinician explaining what's involved and obtaining your consent. Notes are handled to professional standards, and safeguarding considerations are respected throughout.

Professional indemnity

Our visiting clinicians carry current professional indemnity insurance appropriate to mobile and domiciliary practice — not a clinic-only policy that excludes home working.

GP & MDT communication

Where clinically appropriate and where you consent, we can communicate with your GP, hospital team, or other involved professionals. Never done without your knowledge or agreement.

When a home visit isn't the right option

A home visit is unlikely to be right if you need diagnostic imaging, specialist equipment, or a clinical environment to be assessed properly. And a home visit doesn’t replace emergency or urgent medical care: if you or the person you’re caring for has sudden, severe or worrying new symptoms — chest pain, sudden severe weakness, sudden difficulty breathing, or anything suggesting an acute medical event — call 999 or contact your GP urgently. A home physiotherapy appointment is not an emergency service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a physiotherapist come to my home?

Yes — a qualified, HCPC-registered home visit physiotherapist travels to your home, care setting, or supported living address for an individual assessment and agreed rehabilitation plan, subject to suitability and confirmed coverage in your area.

Four clusters: Berkshire (Reading, Windsor, Slough, Maidenhead, Bracknell), Surrey (Guildford, Woking, Reigate, Epsom), Kingston (Kingston upon Thames, Wimbledon, Twickenham, Richmond) and Hounslow (Hounslow, Brentford, Chiswick). Contact us with your postcode to confirm before booking.

Consent and a discussion of your history and goals, then a movement and functional review in your own environment — using your actual furniture, stairs and layout where they’re relevant. The visit ends with an explanation of findings, an agreed plan, and a home exercise programme where appropriate.

Adults where travelling to a clinic is impractical — post-surgical recovery, reduced mobility, pain that makes journeys difficult — or where the home is the most useful place to assess the concern. Not a general substitute for clinic care where clinic attendance is practical.

Fees reflect the assessment time, travel, and any follow-up visits planned. We confirm exact fees before any visit takes place — please contact us for current pricing in your area.

Where clinician competence and case suitability are confirmed, yes — home visits for stroke, Parkinson’s, MS or acquired brain injury are available. For complex cases, home visits usually work best alongside wider specialist input.

Yes, where the setting has confirmed visiting clinicians are permitted and access, consent and safeguarding arrangements are in place. Resident consent is obtained directly from the individual before any assessment proceeds.

The physiotherapist comes to you. It really is that simple.
